3 day Tuna & State Record Tilefish

Hey All,

We haven't done much bottom fishing lately due to adverse weather conditions, but we finally got a break this week and got out on a special 3 day trip this week. We headed out on Tuesday in hopes of Tuna, and Swordfish.  We started off on the troll in 30 fathoms and trolled all the way to edge with nothing to show. Our first night there was plenty of shark action. We released around 15 Blue sharks, 2 small makos. We started on the troll around day break and caught a couple yellowfins up to 40lbs. We then tried some Tilefishing and we caught a few Goldens up to 15lbs.  We set up on the chunk before sunset and we were back in the shark action. We once again release many Blue sharks, kept one Mako, and release a small Sword fish. The last morning we trolled for a couple of hours with no tuna bites, so we decided to do some deep dropping.  The first drift produced double headers of black bellied rose fish. Then the next few drifts we got into some Golden Tilefish and Red Hake up to 7lbs.  Biggest Golden weighed in at 62lbs, which is a possible State record. The final tally was around a couple dozen rose fish, 15 Tilefish, and 6 Red Hake.  Daily trips for tog are $60 per person and that includes rod, reel, and bait. Overnight Tuna/Tile trips are $300 per person.  Tuna trips sail at noon and return noon the following day. Reservations required for all special trips, please call 410-458-8343 for more information and reservations.

Beautiful fishing captain. I have been interested in a 24 hour canyon trip. What can I expect to catch compared to your 3 day tuna trip? I know every trip yeilds different results but gennerally what should I expect tos see? Id love to grab a few of those golden tile fish even if they are not state champions. Congratulations by the way! Beautiful fish!
I have a rod and reel but I dont know if it is adequate for the fis your catching. Can you let me know? I have a:
Van Staal VSB250 Spinning Reel ( VSB250S)
1 VAN-0040 - Van Staal VJS58-325 Jig rod 325g

Not traditional but is it adequate?

yeah, I know it's not traditional....you probably use conventional reels, but it's top of the line and I have 50 # braid on it. Will it work?

Tom,

Your setup would fit just fine with the type of fishing we normally do. It will be perfect for jigging tunas, as well as seabass. It may be a little bit of work tile fishing with a spinning reel, but it is work dropping 800ft to the bottom regardless of the setup. On our 24hr trips we travel to the canyons in hope for Tuna, Swordfish, Mahi Mahi, Shark, and Tilefish. We usually leave around noon and return early afternoon the following day. We chunk/jig during the night, and depending on the conditions during the day we may chunk, troll, or tilefish. We also offer 18hr deep drop trips for seabass and tilefish. Since seabass season is closed these will strictly be Tilefish trips until seabass reopens. Let me know if you have anymore questions....Thanks
